About LCP

Who are Lisburn City Paddlers? Lisburn City Paddlers or LCP was formed in October 2008 by a small group of paddlers from the Lisburn and Greater Belfast areas.

In 2014 this grew to 85 members and we are now renowned as one of the most active clubs in Northern Ireland. A cross community club, we have members come from all areas and backgrounds with representation from Ukraine and France. A third of our membership is female and we are committed to increasing this.

Emphasis

Members are interested in most aspects of the sport including white-water kayaking, surfing, open canoeing (both touring and flat water) and slalom. We make no apologies that the emphasis of the club is firmly rooted in white water river running. We have a growing Open Canoe section who are currently pushing the boundaries for OC1 white water paddling in Ireland. Members are actively encouraged to take on the challenge of white water. Starting on the four weirs at Shaw’s Bridge to running the Liffey Descent and taking on the challenges of Alpine rivers in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.

Trips and Tours

In the last 12 months the club has organised several white water trips, a self contained trip to the French Alps in June 2014 and in Oct 2014 Crana Weekend. In June 2014, 13 members of LCP spent a week at Le Monêtier-les-Bains in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France running Alpine white water rivers such as the Onde, Durance and Guil. In October 2014 10 members of LCP attended the Crana Canoe white water weekend in Donegal, a trip that catered for all levels of paddler. On the gentler side we participate in all CANI recreational flat water paddles and run family club days in places such as Castlewellan.

Club Mark

In 2012 LCP attained SportNI, Club Mark status. Club Mark aims to identify, develop, accredit and recognise high quality junior sports clubs and the contribution that they make to the development of sport in Northern Ireland

Juniors Section

In conjunction with Belfast Kayak Club, LCP run a thriving juniors scheme. This involves both pool sessions in the winter and river sessions in the spring/summer months.

Coaching

LCP are fully affiliated to the Governing Body The Canoe Association of Northern Ireland (CANI). We have 15 coaches at various levels on BCU (UKCC) Coaching Scheme who will encourage new members to embark upon the BCU Star Test achievement awards. River conditions will largely dictate club sessions as we will not introduce beginners to the sport if rivers are in flood. We will not compromise on safety.
